International Minangkabau Literacy Festival-2: A Journey of Inspiration and Togetherness

Life is a tapestry woven with unexpected encounters, a series of serendipitous moments that shape our perspectives and alter our destinies. One such twist of fate led me to the International Minangkabau Literacy Festival-2 (IMLF-2), an event that has since captivated my mind and ignited my spirit. It was a chance encounter with remarkable individuals from around the globe that sparked my curiosity and propelled me onto this extraordinary path.

The International Minangkabau Literacy Festival-2 (IMLF-2) once again graced the cities of Padang, Padang Panjang, Baso, and Batu Sangkar in West Sumatra, Indonesia. This eagerly anticipated literary festival became a magnet for book lovers, writers, and literacy activists from all corners of the country. As a volunteer at this event, IMLF-2 was not merely a festival for me; it was an inspiring journey filled with camaraderie. Here, I discovered a boundless ocean of knowledge, forged new friendships with fellow literacy warriors, and experienced the collective spirit of advancing literacy in Indonesia.

The unique tale of my volunteer experience at IMLF-2 began with the warm welcome extended to the arriving delegates. The act of welcoming delegates from various nations was an unforgettable moment. I was particularly impressed by the presentation of batik-patterned scarves, symbolizing their entry into the Minangkabau realm. Welcoming delegates from across the globe was not just a task; it was an opportunity to exchange stories, learn new traditions, and witness the boundless passion for literacy. This moment marked the commencement of an unforgettable, vibrant IMLF-2 journey that opened my eyes to the beauty of diversity.

In addition to welcoming delegates, as a volunteer, I had to be prepared to fulfill their every need to ensure their seamless participation in the diverse events packed into IMLF-2. From literacy seminars and delegate performances to cultural explorations, cultural seminars, and traditional dinner events held from May 7th to 12th, the experience was truly remarkable. As a volunteer, I gained so much, starting with the opportunity to contribute to the smooth running of the event. I also indirectly learned about literacy, was amazed by the incredible works of literacy activists from around the world, and my own love for literacy grew naturally through my involvement in IMLF-2.

As a volunteer, I subconsciously prioritized the needs of the delegates over my own, ensuring their comfort and fulfilment. Sometimes, I had to forgot my own rest periods to prepare for their needs. I faced these challenges with unwavering dedication, laughter, and happiness, learning from mistakes and rectifying them immediately. Numerous dynamics emerged, but as a volunteer, I am proud of the learning process I underwent during IMLF-2. The generosity of the authors who gifted their books to a volunteer like me made me feel honored to receive such extraordinary works from renowned authors such as Prof. Aminur Rahman, Ms. Khaty Susan, and the renowned poet from Shanghai, Anna Keiko.

However, amidst the joyous atmosphere and literary fervour of IMLF-2, an unexpected landslide struck. This disaster left committees and delegates stranded at the return location for approximately 20 hours. Fear and anxiety gripped the moment. Yet, amidst the tense situation, gratitude and camaraderie prevailed. Volunteers and delegates assisted one another, offering support and sharing whatever food and beverages were available. Stories and light hearted laughter amidst the challenging circumstances served as a reminder that we are all one family. This disaster was not merely a test; it was a moment to realize the preciousness of life and the importance of unity. When we finally emerged from the disaster site, gratitude overwhelmed our hearts. This catastrophe had altered our perspectives, reminding us to cherish every moment in life. This experience also strengthened the bond of brotherhood between organizers and delegates, transforming IMLF-2 from a literary festival into a platform for mutual support and the dissemination of the spirit of camaraderie.

As IMLF-2 drew to a close, tears of farewell welled up as we parted with the delegates. Tight handshakes, warm embraces, and promises of reunion marked the end of an unforgettable festival. Amidst the poignant farewells, seeds of hope for a reunion at IMLF-3 were sown. As a volunteer, I believe this event was more than just a literary festival; IMLF-2 became a moment of unification for souls yearning for knowledge and brotherhood. Cultural exchanges, literary discussions, and shared laughter wove the threads of invaluable friendships. Behind the farewells, prayers and hopes were etched for the continuation of this bond of brotherhood and for IMLF-3 to be a reunion filled with joy and an even more ardent spirit of literacy. ***
